The Story of a Room: The Office

If you are just tuning into this series you can check out the introduction here, the Living Room here, and the entryway here

Let's revisit the office in it's original state....

Erin and I discussed having shelving along the back wall and then floating a desk in the middle.
By the windows we wanted two chairs with a small table in between. Whenever we have windows with such beautiful trim we always like to suggest roman shades so we don't cover up any of that trimwork! Our client also really wanted a coat rack in here.

Let's start off with the desk options!

We didn't have a lot of space for a very large desk. Our client mapped out the ideal size so we knew what we were looking for. These were the desks we liked:

In the end the Jospehine Desk ended up being the best choice.  We loved it's smaller scale and the price was great!

Next up was the desk chair... we sent these options:

Natural Bowen Wishbone Chair

She really loved the wishbone chair.  It's so beautiful in person! I can't wait until you can see it in the room.

Next to the windows we wanted to do two chairs.  We thought something in a light neutral would be best.

She went with the Sutter White chairs. These are the same chairs we used in this room.  She was slightly worried about the lightness of the fabric so it took some convincing on our end.  Honestly once we got a throw and some pillows on these chairs they were pretty covered up anyway!

The office shelf decision was a tough one.  As we mentioned earlier we wanted three shelves along the back wall.  Here were a few choices:

Initially we all agreed on the Hemnes shelf for the price and look.  The only issue was that it was sort of an unfinished white wash instead of a solid white like she wanted so we'd have to paint them.. so we set out to find something else white in the price range we needed.

I found these shelves at Target that were a great price and she loved them.

She loved the raised legs and molding up top.  However... once she measured them in the room she was nervous about the height.

They were only 6' high which felt a little too low with her 9' ceilings.
So we went back to the Hemnes. The height was perfect! We decided to explore doing it in the gray-brown color.
Here is a little mock-up so she could see how the shelves would look with the entryway.

Even though we liked the gray-brown our heart was set on white... so back to the drawing board! I was searching and searching one night and came across this great post from Centsational Girl.

She put together a great Ikea combo to create a stunning built-in look.

Yay!! She loved it so it was decided. On Kate's blog she talked about how even though the Besta and the Billy Bookcases were different whites you couldn't really tell once they were installed together. Unfortunately the lighting in our client's house was different and when she got her shelves in the color difference was more noticeable.

But she loved the combo and the look of the shelves together so she decided to keep them and just paint them to match.

Lastly we had to decide on art. Since we weren't doing the framed calendar prints in the entryway we talked about doing them in the office instead.  We were planning on doing those until I came across these free printables from Poppytalk

We loved that these botanicals were slightly more modern looking! I just had them printed at Costco and they turned out great.

These decisions took up the bulk of the office planning. I'm going to let Erin tackled the fabric scheme again so you can see how that all went down...

For the office we chose to do Schumacher's Bleeker in the Absinthe color way for all of the window treatments.

This color matched the living room chairs so well, we wanted to bring it into the office to make the two spaces feel cohesive. Having such a bright color on all the windows in the small space brought us to use lighter furniture and a lighter rug to still give the room an airy feeling. We chose to put some chartreuse pillows on the chairs but still felt like it was missing something. Last minute we decided to throw in a little animal print lumbar and a pink throw to give it that small wow factor. I love a good animal print in any room so I thought this was the perfect touch!

Thanks Erin!

Tomorrow is the big reveal! I hope you all are as excited as I am to show off the space! And just because I love you all so much here is a little sneak peek...
